The Pilots Corner
Tuesday 8/23/11
The Truett & Osborne race is always a fun race but a tuners race. The track can be a liitle rough and slick in spots and you just have to get get down it as well as you can. We all have the same condiditions.
First round of qualifying had us in the number one slot but by second round two bikes got around us. Mitch Brown ran a 6.06 to take over the number one spot and Chuck Jones ran a 6.22 to take the second spot. That left us in third with a 6.24.
We went back out for the 3rd round of qualifying to try get back the number one slot but it wasn't to be as we smoked the tire at half track.
Race day saw us racing last years winner, Alan Peterson, in the first round. We got by Alan as he was struggling to get down the track all day. Second round was a doozy as we had Alvin Kobernusz on his beautiful yellow Top Fueler. We got by Alvin on a holeshot win. He ran a 6.37 to our 6.38. It was a good race.
For the finals it was us and Mitch Brown. Mitch put us in the left lane which we had trouble with during qualifying but thats racing. We launched and our bike was heading toward the centerline so I shut it off and ran a 6.41 to Mitch's 6.06. We were runner up and Mitch was the Top Fuel winner. A fun race as always.
NGK, Energy One Clutches, Amsoil, Nungesser Engineering, Jim Stultz. I couldn't do it with out you. Thank you very much!!
Thursday 6/30/11
After years of folks telling me that I needed to go to Bowling Green Kentucky for an AMRA race we finally headed north and wasn't disappointed. A very nice track snuggled back in the tree's in Beech Bend Park.
Saturdays qualifying netted us a 3rd place qualifying spot with a low ET of 7.32 at 180.62mph. The bike was running good and straight.
The first round we were to run Hal Cort from Houston but Hal had a mishap when starting his fueler and it blew up on the stand taking him out of competition. We made the solo pass alone. That moved us in to the semi's.
We had to run the number one qualifier, Jake Storduer, riding one of the well prepped Fascoon Ass machines. It was a good race as Jake ran a 7.08 to our 7.32 and put us on the trailer. Our day was done but a great weekend as the bike is coming around.
A very special thanks to Dale Nungesser as he was directing the tune on the machine. I would also like to thank John Travlestead for coming out and spending the weekend helping us out. We needed the help.
Thursday 6/2/11
We finally got to make a race this year and had nothing but great results. After several chassis adjustments and changes this winter the bike went dead straight every single pass. Even with a 30mph left to right wind. The bike set up on the wheelie bar and was a pleasure to ride.
The new Nungesser Engineering clutch hat worked fantastic and reponded to the slightest adjustments.
With all the changes made and time spent it was a great first outing as we won the event. An 1/8 mile track with a short shut down so we really couldn't stretch her legs but did pull a 4.89 out of the place and that was shutting off a 100' early in order to be able to stop.
A special thanks to my crew chief Jim Stultz for making this show as he was up 31 hours straight to do this event. Adrian Ankershield was the new team member helping us and was quick to learn the process. We couldn't have done it without you guys!!!
We can't wait to head to a nice 1/4 mile event with a good, long shut down. It should be fun so stay tuned!
Saturday 4/30/11
Well we have been waiting for the Texas spring winds to die down but sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Like this spring.
We have made one whole test pass a couple of weeks ago which we got virtually no information from as we spun the tire.
Then I managed to get some kind of lung infection which just took away any energy I had to ride this thing. I missed my first two races we had scheduled. Thanks to my wonderful docotor (who is a great guy) I got to find out that I cannot take steroids as I am apparently, alergic to them. Once I turned red as an apple and thought my head was going to explode, I realized that I might want to quit taking them.
Hopefully I will be rolling this bike out in a couple of weeks for the OPMMA race. Stay tuned as hopefully we are ready to race.
Wednesday 12/8/10
Keep an eye on the schedule as some dates are starting to come together for the 2011 season.
Wednesday 9/15/10
Bennett Racing went to a very hot and humid San Antonio Texas for the AHDRA Nationals last weekend. The track management did a great job on the track for the conditions. Getting a bite on the track certainly wasn't an issue but our handling problems were. We were having some head shake issues when the front tire would sit down and the bike was becoming a little unruly to ride. Out of 3 qualifying attempts we never got one full throttle pass in. In the field, but not in contention as we wanted to be.
Some chassis adjustments will be made during some test & tunes locally to see if the issues can be resolved and then back to racing. Stay tuned.
Wednesday 7/21/10
Bennett Racing rode the Truett Racing Pro Drag bike once again at the AHDRA event in Kansas City the last weekend of June. Once again, a nice machine to ride. Dave Bumgartner was tuning the Nungesser Engineering prepped machine and I brought my crew guy Jim Stultz for the turn around and starting duties. This turned out to be a good combination as we qualified 3rd after Saturday. The fun part was coming as Scott Truett took his new bike and put it in the number one spot.
We had some close calls on Sunday going rounds but managed to get to the final round at the end of the day. In the finals it was Scotty's new bike verses us on his old bike. At the end of the final Scott Truett beat us as I got out of the groove at little and there was no catching Truett. He was on a string all day and enjoying the new bike!
A good weekend though as both Dale Nungesser built motors on these two bikes were the machines to beat.
Thursday 6/10/10
Bennett Racing had an opportunity to ride Scott Truett's Pro Drag bike at the AHDRA race in Norwalk Ohio last weekend. What a fun ride it was. The downside was the weather as it rained all weekend so we had to work to get in the passes we did. Dale Nungesser of Nungesser Engineering was doing the tuning work on both of the Truett machines as Scotty Truett rode the new bike he bought from Willie Herschberger. Due to the weather we only got to go down the track 3 times all weekend. We qualified 6th in a full field of bikes and we were ready for Sundays race.
The lack of passes reared it's ugly head on the first round Sunday though as the bike shook the tire then went up in smoke at around 100' foot mark. We were done for the day. The other Truett machine went on to win the race with impressive numbers of 7.34, 7.37 & 7.40. Nungesser had that bike tuned to the max and it showed it.
This was also my first time at Summit Motorsports Park and wow what a faciltiy! A first class operation to say the least. Imaculate from one end to the other. I walked in the restroom for the first time Friday and thought I had walked in to one at a Las Vegas casino! I never seen anything like this at a race track. Absolutely spotless and very nice!
The owner, Bill Bader, deserves much cudos for the effort he put's in to this facility. He was hands on the entire time we were there and would go out of his way to walk over and say hi. This guy dodesn't sit up in the tower and let everyone else do the work. He is down on the track checking track prep, directing the brooms and dryers and anything else that needs done. They at one point had dried this track at least 13 times. They were bound and determined to get this race in but the last time they dried it was around 10:30 that night. Pro Fuel and one other class got down the track before the rain came again and that was it. Top Fuel was sitting in the lanes and did not get to run their final. Quite a bummer for sure but not for lack of effort on the tracks part.
I want to thank Scott Truett for giving me an opportunity to ride a very nice Pro Drag bike and Dale and Dave for working their tails off to turn these 2 machines around. It made for a lot of work with this rain shortened event.
Friday 4/2/10
The upgrades on the bike are just about finished according to Dale so hopefully we'll go pick the bike up from Kansas and get it back in the Texas sun once again for some testing. If all goes well we should be at the track soon!
